Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre

(CACPC)

The Central Alberta Crime Prevention Centre is the hub of crime prevention activity in Red Deer and the surrounding region. Operating as a registered non-profit charity, the CACPC brings together multiple community safety programs under one roof, providing residents, businesses, and organizations with access to education, resources, and support. Located at 1-4311 49 Ave in Red Deer, the Centre is open Monday through Friday, 9am to 4pm, and offers many of its services free of charge. It’s not just an office; it’s a place where the community comes together to build something safer for everyone.

COPS (Citizens on Patrol)

Citizens on Patrol (COP) is a volunteer program that puts extra eyes and ears on Red Deer’s streets. Volunteers patrol their neighbourhoods and report suspicious activity to police. No confrontation required, just observation. This visible community presence has a measurable deterrent effect on crime and serves as a vital bridge between residents and local RCMP.

Who We Are
Red Deer City Citizens on Patrol is a non profit program run by volunteers aimed at reducing crime in the community through active participation of citizens.

How It Works
Members work in pairs to patrol by vehicle, bicycle, or foot, and report any suspicious or criminal activity they observe to the police. Patrol shifts are flexible with the ability for members to choose the time of day or night, and duration of their patrol. A commitment of 4 hours per month is suggested.

Patrol Members
Members must be at least 18 years of age, have a clean driving record, pass a criminal record check and security screening by the RCMP, as well as complete the Citizens on Patrol training.

CPTED

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design
CPTED (pronounced “sep-ted”) stands for Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, and it’s based on a straightforward idea: the way spaces are designed has a direct impact on whether crime happens in them. By maximizing natural sightlines, improving lighting, controlling access points, and maintaining properties to a high standard, residents and property owners can make their environments far less inviting to criminal activity. The CACPC offers CPTED training and assessments to help homeowners, landlords, and community groups apply these principles in practical ways. It’s a proactive, evidence-based approach that goes well beyond locks and alarms.

Rural Watch

The Alberta Rural Crime Watch Association is a province-wide, community-based program designed to address the unique crime prevention challenges faced by rural residents and acreage owners. Rural properties are often more isolated and harder for law enforcement to monitor, making community cooperation all the more critical. Rural Watch encourages neighbours to communicate, share information about suspicious activity, and work alongside local RCMP detachments to keep their areas safe. The program operates in Red Deer County in collaboration with local law enforcement, and is a vital resource for anyone living outside the city limits who wants to take an active role in protecting their property and community.
